Core Facilities & IBC Compliance


The support services and technology provided by core facilities are critical to facilitate basic and translational research programs. Those facilities should be registered with the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) in case experiments involve at least one of the following:
  • Recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecules
  • Biohazardous agents (e.g. bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, prions)
  • Human source materials (e.g. blood, bodily secretions and tissues, primary and established cell lines).

Core Facilities' Users & IBC Compliance

IBC registration should not only apply to the core facilities, but also to their users. Because of that, the IBC counts on the cooperation of the Institution’s core facilities verifying IBC compliance of their collaborators. To simplify this process, the Biosafety office has developed the following communication procedure:

The Core Facility receives a service request,

  • The Core Facility contacts the Biosafety Office indicating the name of the PI who requesting its services,
  • The Biosafety office verifies and indicated whether or not the PI is compliant with the IBC.

If the PI has an active IBC protocol:  Services may be provided 

If the PI does not have an active IBC protocol:

            1) The Biosafety office notifies the PI regarding IBC registration requirements,

            2) PI submits IBC protocol for review,

            3) The Biosafety office contacts the Core Facilities immediately after IBC approval,

            4) Core services may be provided.
